Disposing of Old or Unwanted Medicines
Bring unused or unwanted medicines (non controlled only) to South River for recycling!
It is so important to dispose of old medications in the proper way. Yet, many of us are unsure of the safe procedures to take.
Now, both South River Compounding Pharmacy stores accept unused or unwanted medicines for recycling. Non-controlled substances can be brought to either store for safe disposal during pharmacy hours. We can accept liquids of no more than 4 oz.
Midlothian: Mon-Fri 9:30am - 6pm West End: Mon-Fri 9am - 5:30pm
Flushing medications contributes to contamination of our water supply. For information on how pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and other microconstituents affect our water supply, please click on the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality link below:
Controlled substances can be disposed of in household trash, by doing the following:
1. Pour medication into a sealable plastic bag. If medication is a solid (pill, liquid capsule, etc.), crush it or add water to dissolve it. 2. Add kitty litter sawdust, coffee grounds (or any material that mixes with the medication that makes it less appealing for pets and children to eat) the plastic bag. 3. Seal the plastic bag and put it in the trash. 4. Remove and destroy ALL identifying personal information (prescription label) from all medication containers before recycling them or throwing them away.
